I Will Not Forget This, My Friend
WHEN: Monday, May 05, 2008, 7pm - 9pm
WHERE: Congregation Beth El, Jacobs Family Community Hall

This documentary is unique because there is very little video material available about Israel's War Of Independence of 1947/8. The producer of this film, the late Menachem Shuval, was a member of a Palmach unit in Israel's 1948 War of Independence that suffered heavy casualties in a heroic battle for the Nebbi Yusha fortress in Upper Galilee. Of the twenty-two men killed in that battle, twelve came from a single group of close life-long friends, living in kibbutz Daphna. Several of them died while trying to rescue their wounded friends, refusing to leave them behind. The dead soldiers were buried in a common grave by the fortress that had become a national monument.

It took Mr. Shuval forty years to overcome the emotional trauma of the battle before producing this moving retrospective documentary. The subject is universal, dealing with the pain and agony of war by those who survived it. This film was produced for Israel's Educational TV Network 40 years later, and premiered on Israel's TV on Memorial Day (Yom Hazikaron) in 1990. It has been rebroadcast on Memorial Day almost every year since.

Amnon Ben-Yehuda, who appears in the documentary, was seriously wounded in that battle and owes his life to the film's producer who was one of those who rescued him. Amnon ended up composing the main musical theme for the film, as well as translating and producing the English version.

Original language: Hebrew. A documentary. 42 minutes

Peter Yarrow's talents as a creative artist-both with Peter, Paul & Mary and as a solo performer-are frequently directed at using music to convey a message of humanity and caring. His gift for songwriting has produced some of the most moving songs Peter, Paul & Mary have recorded, including "Puff, the Magic Dragon", "Day is Done", "Light One Candle," and "The Great Mandala". For him, his most meaningful undertaking to date, is Project Operation Respect: "Don't Laugh At Me".

Yarrow's life and work, embraces the premise that if each person finds a way to articulate his or her own voice and joins with others, together they can become a powerful force for the transformation of society.
