"The Intellectual Assault on Israel on Campus:  Where is it Headed?"

Dr. Kenneth W. Stein is the William E. Schatten Professor of Contemporary Middle Eastern History, Political Science and Israeli Studies at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. He is the author of four books, almost a dozen book chapters, encyclopedia entries, dozens of scholarly articles, and literally hundreds of newspaper contributions.

In 1983, Former President Jimmy Carter appointed Stein as the first permanent executive director of the Carter Center.  The Carter Center, established in partnership with Emory University, is committed to advancing human rights and alleviating unnecessary human suffering.  Stein held the position until 1986, and continued to serve as the center’s Middle East fellow until December, 2006.  In that same year, following the publication of Carter’s book, Palestine: Peace not Apartheid, Stein was one of the first to speak out publicly about his former boss.  At that time, Stein wrote: “He (Carter) does what no non-fiction author should ever do: He allows ideology or opinion to get in the way of facts. While Carter says that he wrote the book to educate and provoke debate, the narrative aims its attack toward Israel, Israeli politicians, and Israel's supporters. It contains egregious errors of both commission and omission. To suit his desired ends, he manipulates information, redefines facts, and exaggerates conclusions. Falsehoods, when repeated and backed by the prestige of Carter's credentials, can comprise an erroneous baseline for shaping and reinforcing attitudes and policymaking. Rather than bring peace, they can further fuel hostilities, encourage retrenchment, and hamper peacemaking.”
